Originally from China, Tan is a freelance photographer currently based in South Carolina, USA.
Tan, who was once an assistant to the well-known Chinese master photographer Quanfu Tang, began his career by learning photography in a traditional Chinese photo studio in Chongqing, China. After graduating with a degree in photography from the Beijing Film Academy in 1992, he worked as a staff photographer for Hong Kong ATV in Haikou, Hainan, China.
In 1994, he founded his own photography studio in his hometown, Chongqing, specializing in advertising and portrait photography. Tan immigrated to the United States in 2009. Since then, he has worked extensively in South Asia, focusing on social issues. He has been a long-time contributor to Reuters, Getty Images, the National Geographic Community, and a wide variety of Asian photography magazines.
譚偉,自由攝影師,原籍中國,現居美國南卡羅來納州。早年在中國重慶留真照相館師從著名人像攝影大師唐全福學習人像攝影,開啟職業攝影師生涯。1992年從北京電影學院攝影系圖片攝影專業畢業後,在中國海南省海口市擔任香港亞洲電視全職攝影師。

1994年,譚偉在重慶創立盛裝攝影工作室,從事商業廣告與人像攝影。2009年移居美國,此後長期在南亞及喜馬拉雅地區工作,專注於當地人文、人權以及社會生活等題材的拍攝。譚偉是路透社、美聯社、蓋蒂圖片社、《國家地理》雜誌以及多家亞洲攝影期刊的長期供稿人。
